Cardiac computed tomography (CT) is a specialized form of computed tomography which permits the non-invasive visualization of the anatomy and pathology of the heart. Coronary CT angiography (coronary CTA) is a cardiac CT technique which refers specifically to the use of x-ray contrast media to visualize the coronary arteries in particular. It is used in the evaluation of acute and chronic chest pain, the investigation of newly detected cardiomyopathy (heart muscle dysfunction), and in some cases as a pre-operative examination before surgery. Coronary CTA is the most sensitive non-invasive means available today for detecting coronary atherosclerosis, whether at a late (obstructive) stage or at an early (non-obstructive) stage. Data obtained from a coronary CTA are used to make a wide variety of patient management decisions ranging from early preventive strategies to late-stage invasive revascularization approaches.

Like any diagnostic imaging technique, the quality of the information obtained from coronary CTA is influenced by the clarity of the images obtained. With that in mind, this video series "How to Perform Optimal Coronary CT" is presented by the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) as a service to the clinical community performing, reading, and relying on coronary CTA to make day-to-day clinical decisions for patients around the world.
