The world is currently suffering through a pandemic outbreak of severe respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) known as Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Multiple global health organizations advise medical facilities to “reschedule non-urgent outpatient visits as necessary”. This Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) continuing medical education (CME) activity offers guidance for cardiac CT (CCT) practitioners with these recommendations in order to decrease the risk of COVID-19 transmission in their facilities while deciding on the timing of CCT exams.
- Understand approaches to the delivery of CCT services in a manner that will promote safe practices to technologists, imagers and patients. This also includes deferring CCT exams in conjunction with referring physicians that can be safely postponed in order to minimize the risk of exposure.
- Identify urgent, semi-urgent and elective indications for effective utilization of CCT for patients with undiagnosed or underlying cardiovascular conditions to discuss with referring physicians on a case by case basis.
- Discuss the limited role of CCT in patients under investigation (PUI) or with confirmed COVID-19 including the identification of incidental pulmonary findings.
